Tech Tips for Soon-to-be Great Writers

Tech Tips for Writers is an (almost) weekly post on overcoming Tech Dread. I’ll cover issues that friends, both real-time and virtual, have shared. Feel free to post a comment about a question you have. I’ll cover it in a future Tip.

Q: My desktop icons disappeared for no known reason. What do I do?

A: This is a question I get from parents more often than you’d think. One moment, they’re all there, lined up like little soldiers. The next, they’re gone.

Here’s what works about 80% of the time:

  1. right clock on the desktop
  2. Select View
  3. Make sure that the Show Desktop Icons is checked
  4. If not, check it

Desktop icons reappear.

  1. Oh this is great! This has happened to me on numerous occasions, and I had no idea where they’d all disappeared off to! Now I’m equipped to deal with that disaster next time it happens.
